Elon Musk shuts down report that Tesla is scrapping its ‘$25,000 Mannequin 2’ electrical automobile

Elon Musk has shut down a report that Tesla is scrapping its ‘$25,000 Mannequin 2’ electrical automobile in favor of its ‘Robotaxi’.

For the previous few years, Tesla has been creating a next-generation automobile platform that’s going to allow the launch of two new automobiles: a smaller and cheaper automobile, typically known as ‘Mannequin 2’, and a devoted self-driving automobile, which Musk calls “Robotaxi”.

Now, Reuters experiences that Tesla has scrapped plans for the previous:

Tesla has canceled the long-promised cheap automobile that buyers have been relying on to drive its development right into a mass-market automaker, in response to three sources conversant in the matter and firm messages seen by Reuters.

Musk shortly denied the report – saying that “Reuters is mendacity”:

Nonetheless, Musk did reply to a submit, seemingly in settlement, suggesting that Tesla may need shifted give attention to the “Robotaxi” fairly than the “$25,000 automobile”.

The Reuters report did word that Tesla “will proceed creating self-driving robotaxis on the identical small-vehicle platform.”

Musk beforehand mentioned that Tesla plans to unveil its next-gen electrical automobiles towards the tip of the 12 months and launch manufacturing towards the tip of 2025.

Tesla is presently constructing its new manufacturing programs for the next-generation at its Gigafactory Texas facility in Austin.

Electrek’s Take

From a strategic standpoint, this made no sense to me. Tesla 100% wants a less expensive automobile to be able to increase its volumes.

I didn’t imagine the report after it first got here out, particularly since I’ve seen loads of actual points with Reuters’s Tesla reporting previously. We even caught them sneakily again enhancing a submit to make it seem like Elon lied about calling out their reporting. I wrote a thread about it:

That mentioned, it does sound like there’s one thing to the report, with not less than Tesla prioritizing the robotaxi over the cheaper automobile based mostly on Elon’s follow-up response to the suggestion.

I do know it’s not a cause for unhealthy reporting, but when Tesla had a PR division, it might keep away from points like that.
